Even though the Optimistic Orators knew that we would be capturing the Gavel, they were not ready to turn the coveted trophy over. We all had fun teasing each other on the fact that some clubs had traveled hundreds of miles to capture the Gavel, while others had only to walk across the street. Harold Vroman as the Toastmaster for the meeting did a wonderful job regaling us with the Traveling Gavel’s brief history, and each of us committed ourselves to keep the Gavel traveling throughout the District, even after this capture. It was a very fun and enjoyable meeting, and we were glad to finally fulfill the promise to bring the Gavel to the 2016-2017 District Director’s club, even if it was during the last days of her administration.

The raiding team from Optimistic Orators rescued the Traveling Gavel Trophy from the clutches of the Canton Communicators who had held it hostage for several months. Al (Al Capone) Albee was a great Table Topics Speaker; Marilyn (Ma Barker) Albee did an excellent trophy rescue evaluation; Gretchen (Gang Mom) Vroman timed the whole affair including our getaway; Harold (Hold em Hostage) Vroman distracted the trophy guards with his dazzling speech. All in all, the Canton Communicators hostage holders (Shady Robert, Shotgun Sally and Muscles McGee) and the rest of their team were gracious and friendly as they welcomed us to their meeting.

The recent capturing club made a grave mistake by challenging our club to take the trophy. We quickly assembled a special forces group for an overnight raid. Robert, our gang leader and get-away driver (aka Shady Robert) recruited Vijaya, master planner (aka Shotgun Sally) and Kodzo, enforcer (aka Muscles McGee) for a clandestine operation.

Moving stealthily, we got into position at their club. They quickly relinquished the trophy and greeted us with open arms and warm smiles. We returned the favor by taking part in their wonderful club meeting and showing our hospitality. It was a treat to visit. However, we have grown attached to that bit of bling and intend to keep it as long as possible. We know where Jimmy Hoffa is located and intend to keep the trophy thereabouts.

Dearborn Dynamic Toastmasters Club, the rightful home of the Traveling Gavel Trophy, sent three courageous members to distant Perrysburg Ohio to rescue the Traveling Gavel Trophy from the clutches of the Advanced Articulators Club. At first A+ put up a token resistance, but after seeing the determination of the rescue team from 70 miles away, gave up and welcomed us with food, fun and fellowship. They even invited Krisi Vadnais, the 2016 D28 International Speech Champion to come and give a preview of her contest speech she plans to give at the finals in Washing D.C.

The rescue team was made up of three of the six members who also rescued the trophy from Optimistic Orators on February 13. We are proud to be able to say we are the first club to rescue the trophy twice.

Our president, Stephanie Coleman, contacted Marnie Whipple at Cengage in Farmington Hills, Michigan, the then-current holder of the Traveling Gavel—apparently we were the first club to contact them about this! June 14th was the target meeting date.

Upon arrival, a friendly and smiling Marnie greeted us in the lobby, ushered us to their meeting room, and provided introductions prior to the meeting—and what a great meeting it was! They’re a terrific group, high energy, and have a wonderful enthusiasm and eagerness to embrace all Toastmasters has to offer! Pictures were taken post-meeting as they graciously surrendered the prize.

The return road-trip to Ohio was, shall we say, quite interesting and unexpectedly extensive—long tale indeed. Max Kohr is currently assigned to guard the Traveling Gavel with his life.

We found out that the Dearborn Dynamic Club was sheltering the Traveling Gavel, so we contacted them and they allowed us to visit. They said we could capture the gavel IF we attend one of their meetings and participate. On February 23, three members from the Cengage Learning Club, Naithalene (Nate), Gerry, and Marnie met with the Dearborn Dynamic Club. They were not only good-humored; they were considerate – they had cheesecake for us!

Nate and Gerry participated in Table Topics, it was debate style. Gerry also gave a speech, and Marnie was the Story Master. We learned 7 new wacky words from the Word Master, our listening skills were tested by the Listen Master, and we learned the 4 Fs on dealing with stress courtesy of the Toastmaster.

Before we captured the gavel, Dearborn Dynamic offered us their friendship and and we accepted! We had fun participating, learning, and meeting everyone! We were nice about taking the gavel even though we wanted to just snatch it and run!

It took some detective work to find the trophy due to Optimistic Orators keeping their possession secret for so long, but Dearborn Dynamic finally found the Trophy’s location. We sent six members to capture the trophy and were successful – in more ways than one. We had a great experience and were welcomed warmly.

Staci Irvin, a new Competent Communicator (4 days before) practiced her International Contest Speech and received excellent evaluations to help her. Gretchen gave the Word of the Day, “Kerfluffle”, and Harold challenged the members present with Crazy Holiday Table Topics: “All or Nothing Day”, “Save A Spider Day” and “Bonza Bottler Day”.

The morning was a win-win-win. The Dearborn Dynamic Team had a great time and experienced a great club. Optimistic Orators likely will gain three members from the event. Most importantly, the Trophy has been liberated from the clutches of Optimistic Orators.

Rumor had it that the Detroit Riverfront Bards had, by some devious plot instigated by none other than “Honest” John White, seized possession of the gavel from Powertalkers. Once word got out that the Detroit Riverfront Bards had possession, Optimistic Orators assembled a crack team of Toastmasters to pay a visit to the Detroit Riverfront Bards. “Honest” John White, the Bard’s VP of Education, was advised of our intent and he accommodated the team by assigning roles to visiting members of Optimistic Orators.

While there we heard excellent speeches and the Detroit Riverfront Bards were serving free food! Yummy! This was a great way to finish off 2015. I would recommend you go visit the Detroit Riverfront Bards, for the fine fun, fellowship, and food.

After traveling the furthest distance, so far, to capture the Traveling Gavel, Powertalkers would lose the trophy to the Detroit Riverfront Bards who traveled the shortest distance of walking 100 meters across the street to capture the trophy. This capture also distinguished Powertalkers as having had the trophy the shortest period of time.

At the same time, Powertalkers graciously relinquished the trophy to Detroit Riverfront Bards, whose members learned and shared new skills using the most powerful benefit of our Toastmasters’ membership: the ability to visit other clubs around the world and get on the agenda.

On Wednesday morning, October 7, 2015 POWERTALKERS were very excited to accept the Traveling Gavel from the Competent Communicators. We traveled very far to capture this trophy for Powertakers Downtown as Washington Township is located past Van Dyke and 26 Mile Road.

The trip was well worth our time. The members were well received and we all enjoyed a great and memorable experience. POWERTALKERS Teza Searcy, Melvin Davis, Cynthia Garner and Claudia Scott filled four roles on the agenda. There was a full agenda with interesting and informative speeches. Contest caliber evaluations followed and Table Topics were a hoot.

Special recognition to Teza and Melvin for coordinating with Richard Durling. It was a great experience.
