Your new District Governor here, hoping you're having a GREAT summer, and that your Toastmasters experiences continue to be meaningful and beneficial for you. I have three items of note as the year gets going: 1. A quick reminder about the next Toastmasters Leadership Institute (a.k.a. Club Officer Training) scheduled for this Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Owens Community College (Toledo campus) in the Audio/Visual Building. A map and driving directions are at: https://www.owens.edu/about_owens/maps.html The Registration Desk opens at 8:00 AM, the program begins at 8:30 AM, and we?ll wrap up about 12:30 PM. By the way, it?s FREE! Being properly trained is important for your development as a leader. The focus of training will be how to help make (or keep) your club a QUALITY CLUB! All Club and District officers should attend one of these sessions this summer. 2. Also, if anybody on this list is an immediate past club presdient who HAPPENS to have a powder-blue envelope around that arrived a couple of months ago that you have opened, please do so, fish out the card, sign the one marked with an "A", and either mail it to Immediate Past District Governor Karen Holland or send me an e-mail at Governor at d28toastmasters.org, and we'll take it off you hands. We'll be sending information soon for your current president to obtain a duplicate proxy. 3. There are still a few Area Governor positions open: D18 (covers four daytime clubs in Southfield), E24 (northern Macomb County up to Chesterfield Twp), A1 (NW Ohio to the Indiana and Michigan lines), A2 (Greater Perrysburg/Bowling Green, OH), and A8 (Downtown and east side of Toledo, OH). The role of Area Governor is EXTREMELY important for the District, as that's how we in the leadership interface with the clubs and members directly. For the Area Governor, it's a chance to see how other clubs do things (possibly to the benefit of his/her home club), to help other clubs out, and generally see a side of Toastmasters many member never get---life outside of their home club. Also, if you have interest in eventually becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster, you must have done a year as a District Officer, and being Area Governor qualifies. I'm sensitive to gasoline price issues, which is why I'm trying to let folks be Area Governors in close geographical areas to their homes, and possibly be Area Governor to one of their clubs, as much as possible. If you'd be interested in stepping up to the challenge and "Joining the Team", please let me know at governor at d28toastmasters.org Thanks, all, have a great day, and I hope I'll see at least some of you on Saturday! We regret any inconvenience this has caused. We had to cancel the contest because : * The Toastmaster in charge forgot to mark her calendar and now has a date this weekend to go visit Brad and Angelina's new twins in France. * The Contest Chief Judge was caught up in the sludge hauling contract scandal and has fled to Argentina. * The scheduled contestants all got into an argument over who caught the biggest fish over the Fourth of July weekend and were arrested for disorderly conduct. OK, so maybe those are not the reasons, but the event is still off. Sorry!
