This is to let you know that the newest Cornerstone has been posted on the District 28 website, at www.d28toastmasters.org. In it, you will find information about: --- the recent District 28 Conference, including election results for your 2007-2008 District Officers --- a reminder that you should hold elections for your new club officers this month --- information about training for those new club officers, which will be in June at UM-Dearborn and Owens Community College --- other news you can use, including what you should do with the contents of that large powder-blue envelope club presidents got in March/April (short answer---get that proxy to Todd Brockdorf!) This is the last issue of the Cornerstone for this Toastmasters year, and so the last that I will be an official editor for. Next year, I have been honored to be elected as your next Lieutenant Governor of Education and Training, and Ms. Marcella Fedrigo will be the District Public Relations Officer. Also, Ms. Joni Dewan will be the next editor of the Cornerstone. As always, if you have ideas for things to include in the Cornerstone, or have an itch to do an article, please contact us. Not sure what I am talking about? Keep reading. Each club is entitled to a vote at the Regional and International Business Meetings. Each club president received a light blue envelope from Toastmasters International World Headquarters. In that envelope is a proxy to have your club represented at these Business Meetings. Please return your proxies to me as soon as possible. If you are able to attend the Regional or International conventions, your proxy will be returned to you. If you have not held your Open House/Lunch and Learn/Event, THERE IS STILL TIME!!! There are still a few days left in the month of May. Even if you do not hold it by the end of May, still hold one anyway, as it can possibly get you one point closer to Distinguished Club Status (or higher) OR it could help you to qualify for the Distinguished Club Program (you know, that whole 20 member requirement or a net growth of 5 new members for clubs less than 20). And just what's an Accredited Speaker candidate you ask?!? Toastmasters International's Accredited Speaker Program recognizes members who already possess and regularly demonstrate expert public speaking skills. Only a handful of members have what it takes to become Accredited Speakers and less than one-fourth of those who have applied for the program have qualified as Accredited Speakers. After successful completion of the first level screening, the applicant will appear before a Toastmasters International panel at a regional conference or International Convention. There, the applicant will make a 20- to 45-minute presentation (depending on the time available) and be evaluated by an anonymous panel of judges consisting of five Toastmasters who will have the final say on whether or not the applicant passes this segment of the judging. Conor is here to be evaluated for this phase of is journey to Accredited Speaker recognition. I hope that you all had a wonderful and safe weekend! It's time to refocus our attention to important upcoming Toastmasters matters. *Club Officer Training:* This is a reminder that all Club and District officers should plan to attend one of the following Club Officer Training sessions, scheduled for: * Saturday, June 16, 2007, at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in the Social Sciences Building. A map and driving directions are at: http://www.umd.umich.edu/maps_directions/ * Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Owens Community College (Toledo campus) in the Audio/Visual Building. A map and driving directions are at: https://www.owens.edu/about_owens/maps.html For both sessions, the Registration Desk opens at 8:00 AM, the program begins at 8:30 AM, and we?ll wrap up about 12:30 PM. Please arrive on time and please stay for the entire program. It will be well worth it. Also, it?s FREE! Being properly trained is important for your development as a leader. Not attending is a disservice both to yourself and your club members. *Submit Those Applications ASAP!* There's roughly one month left in this Toastmasters year, which concludes on June 30, 2007. Please make sure that your club has submitted the required paperwork to TI, including the Club Officer List for newly elected officers, and dues for continuing members that might not have been submitted in April. If your club has not already done so, hold an Open House to attract new members, and submit those new member applications asap. NOTE: PLEASE, even if your club is over 20 members, PLEASE don't hold onto applications until July. The District receives its funding from TI based on dues payments, and member payments this year are below projections. Fewer paying members means lower funding, which affects our ability to provide high quality services to our members. Also, the District is trying to achieve Distinguished District status for the fourth year in a row, and the biggest challenge is in the area of membership. We REALLY need your help! Encourage your members to achieve their individual goals: * give the speeches necessary to complete their Competent Communication and advanced speech manuals * volunteer for meeting roles and receive feedback on their performance through the Competent Leader manual * wrap up High Performance Leadership Projects * submit the paperwork from successful Club Sponsor, Mentor, and Club Coach assignments Please make sure to celebrate these achievements, to submit the paperwork necessary for official recognition by TI, and to encourage your members to keep setting new Toastmasters goals. (There's always more to learn within the Toastmasters program!) Many clubs have achieved Distinguished Club status or better. If yours is one of them, congratulations! Many others are really close, and with a little effort, can achieve it! Those who believe that Distinguished Club status is out or reach this year, don't despair. Everything you do to grow your club, to improve the quality of your meetings, makes your Toastmasters club a better place for your members to learn and grow. Thank you! Karen Holland District 28 Lt. Governor of Education & Training "Yes It's Possible!"
