From kholland at umd.umich.edu Fri Jul 6 20:17:15 2007 From: kholland at umd.umich.edu (Karen Holland) Date: Fri, 06 Jul 2007 20:17:15 -0400 Subject: [D28_community] Welcome Toastmasters! Message-ID: <468EDB8B.7090608@umd.umich.edu> Fellow Toastmasters, Welcome to the 2007-2008 Toastmasters year! My name is Karen Holland and I am proud to serve as your District Governor. I plan to make the most of this excellent leadership opportunity. Whether you are a district or club officer, a long-time member or a "newbie", by virtue of your membership in Toastmasters, YOU also have an amazing opportunity -- the opportunity to become a more effective speaker, a more attentive listener, a better leader. Please consider July 1 as a "New Year" and resolve to make the most of your opportunities by setting new goals and developing a plan to attain them. I'm merely one member of the District 28 Leadership Team. For a list of the rest of the Team, please check out the District 28 website at www.d28toastmasters.org The District Officers page has been revised, and includes contact links for many of us, including the Division Governors. We are working to update all the information on the website, and plan to launch a "new and improved" site later this summer. We'd love to hear suggestions about what you'd like to see on the new D28 website. Actually, we'd love to hear about your ideas for this new year in lots of areas: * article topics for the District newsletter ("The Cornerstone") * new club leads * public relations ideas to help us help you advertise Toastmasters * marketing suggestions to promote membership in Toastmasters * feedback on the billboards and the recent mentions of Toastmasters on TV (reported twice on WDIV-TV news by Chuck Gaidica around Spring Conference weekend) * conference workshop ideas * club officer training topics * and other areas not listed above If you'd like to get more involved with Toastmasters beyond the club level, please let us know! Volunteers are needed and wanted -- to serve on committees, write Cornerstone articles, conduct surveys, prepare presentations, etc. This year's District theme is "Friends Helping Friends," and we would LOVE to have more friends to work (and play) with this year. On behalf of the entire District, here's to a great year! Cheers! Karen Holland, DTM District 28 Governor, 2007-2008 "Friends Helping Friends" Governor at d28toastmasters.org P.S. Don't forget about the make-up club officer training on Wednesday, July 18 at UM-Dearborn. More information is on the D28 website. Unfortunately, District 28 did not earn Distinguished status for the fourth year in a row. We were just five member payments short of our goal. However, all is not lost. I am extremely proud of the District Executive Committee and the Leadership Team. If you looked at the numbers back in February, it would have seemed like it would have been impossible to get even this close to goal. We made up substantial ground in member payments during the final two months of the year. At the end of April, we were 474 member payments short of goal. At the end of May, we were behind 277 member payments. At the end of June, we ended only 5 member payments short of goal. We added 469 member payments in two months! THAT?S INCREDIBLE! Everyone one who helped in this effort should take pride. Thank you to all of the clubs that added members during these last two months of the year. Among some of the other highlights of this year: - Added 7 new clubs to the district, rising to the 100 active clubs mark for the first time in history and surpassing our goal by 3 clubs. - 181 members earned a Competent Communicator Award, surpassing our goal by 46. - 74 members earned an Advanced Communicator Award, exceeding goal by 36. - 99 members acheived either a Leadership award or DTM, thereby earning the District the maximum number of points in this category, exceeding last year's numbers. - 18 out of 23 Areas achieve Distinguished or better status (78%) compared to 16 Distinguished Areas a year ago. - 5 out of 7 Divisions achieve Select Distinguished or better status (71%) - 47 clubs achieved Distinguished status or better (50%), compared to 46 a year ago. - Improved speech contest quality by creating the position of District Chief Judge and held judges training at all major District events. - Held a joint event with National Speakers Association of Michigan. - Created the position of Corporate Club Hunter, designed to improve our marketing efforts to companies within our District. - Overwhelming response to the District Open House Contest. There is absolutely nothing of which to be ashamed. We had an outstanding year and I am proud of everyone who assisted in this effort. We did it ethically, honestly, and with integrity. The groundwork we laid this year will bear additional fruit next year and for years to come. Message-ID: <072420072234.23078.46A67E67000A093100005A2622155934140D039B@comcast.net> Hello Toastmasters, It gives me great pleasure to announce that District 28 HAS BEEN NAMED A DISTINGUISHED DISTRICT for 2006-2007. Yes, that?s correct. We have earned Distinguished status for the FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW! I know that you are wondering how this happened, especially if you read my message just a few days ago acknowledging that we ended the year just five members short of goal. It turns out that one of our clubs had submitted exactly five new member payments in early June. However, due to a minor paperwork error, those new members were not processed. World Headquarters has since cleared the issues and has recognized our five new members. Therefore, we have achieved or exceeded all of our goals for Competent Communicator and Advanced Communicator awards, club extension, and membership payments, earning the Distinguished District award. As such, be proud that District 28 finished 30th out of 78 districts in the world. Congratulations for all of your hard work throughout the year and congratulations on your successes.
